Malappuram (Keralam) | Keralam Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Monday demanded the immediate resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, saying that people of the country have no faith in the Election Commission.

Accusing the Election Commission (EC) of trying to sabotage the democratic process, Chennithala said that conducting another election under the current poll panel would be a "fraud".

"Therefore, if parliamentary democracy has to survive in India, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar needs to resign immediately and the committee to select a new poll panel should be reconstituted by including the Chief Justice of India," the minister told reporters.

"Then only will our parliamentary democracy survive and become stronger and transparency of the election process will be ensured," he added.

Chennithala said the Congress will be taking forward the protests on the issue by including all the opposition parties in the country.

His remarks come in the wake of calls for Kumar's resignation by Congress leaders over the past few days following reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had flagged multiple issues, including deletion of names in various states during the voter roll revision under SIR.

However, EC officials have said the poll body was unanimous in its decisions relating to the pan-India Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
