Thiruvananthapuram | Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday extended Independence Day greetings to the people of Kerala and Malayalis worldwide, saying the state had always been at the forefront of nation-building.

In his message, Arlekar said India had won independence after a prolonged struggle against colonial rule, during which the country's culture and history had been subjected to attempts at suppression and distortion.

He said the country had progressed in all fields and sectors since Independence, owing to the efforts and contributions of its citizens.

The governor said the efforts and sacrifices of those who fought for the country's freedom could never be forgotten or ignored.

He urged people to rededicate themselves to the vision of a Viksit Bharat—a nation marked by inclusive development, self-reliance and equal opportunity for all—in homage to the sacrifices of countless patriots and freedom fighters.

"I extend my heartfelt greetings and warmest wishes to the people of Kerala and Malayalis across the globe as we celebrate the 80th Independence Day of our beloved nation. This day calls upon us to bow in reverent homage to the countless patriots and freedom fighters whose courage and supreme sacrifice secured our liberty," he said in his message.

He said that as citizens of the world's largest democracy, it was the sacred duty of every Indian to safeguard the freedom, equality and unity bequeathed by the country's founding generation and uphold democratic values that ensure dignity and justice for all.

Arlekar said Kerala, with its proud traditions of literacy, social reform and grassroots democracy, had always been at the forefront of nation-building, adding that there could be no Viksit Bharat without a Viksit Kerala.

"Let this Independence Day inspire us to carry that spirit forward, working together in harmony and purpose towards a stronger, more prosperous India. On this 80th Independence Day, I wish every citizen a future filled with peace, progress and prosperity," he said.
