Thiruvananthapuram | Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday paid tributes to Dr B R Ambedkar on his 135th birth anniversary.
Arlekar, in a Facebook post, recalled Ambedkar's "tireless efforts for social justice and equality" and said that the architect of Indian Constitution would always be an inspiration.
Vijayan, in his social media post paying tribute to Ambedkar, drew attention to the lack of a law to end caste discrimination on campuses.
The CM said that the Centre is yet to take any steps regarding the long-standing demand to enact the Rohith Vemula Act to end caste discrimination on campuses.
He also referred to the recent alleged suicide of a first-year BDS student at Ancharakandi Private Medical College in Kannur, terming it as "extremely painful".
He said news of a rise in extreme forms of casteism including in higher educational institutions, was "worrying" and called for examining whether the values Kerala has acquired as a society have been lost.
He further said that Ambedkar dedicated his entire life to creating a society free from caste discrimination, and it was time for everyone to stand together against the tendencies that foster division and hatred.
Congress leader V D Satheesan and BJP's Kerala state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar also paid homage to Ambedkar on his birth anniversary.
