Thiruvananthapuram | Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Tuesday said the government was considering appointing a commission to study the need for forming new districts and taluks.

Satheesan made the submission in response to a calling attention motion by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MLA T V Ibrahim in the Assembly.

In his motion, he highlighted the need to address district and regional level developmental inequalities in the state and to take steps to ensure the distribution of resources in education, health and transport sectors are in proportion to the population.

The CM said that the government was committed to adopting measures that will reduce the district-level development disparity and ensure resource distribution based on population and backwardness.

He said that the government will also give special consideration to areas like Malabar where there is a lack of services.

The IUML has been asking for a division of Malappuram district for better administrative efficiency and localised development.

In his response, the CM also said that the government was putting forward a development vision that ensures economic growth with social justice by ensuring a balance in infrastructure development and distribution of resources and providing everyone with equal access to government services and development outcomes.

For this, a policy approach will be adopted that comprehensively considers population, backwardness, geographical features, lack of infrastructure, among others in all sectors, including education, health, and transportation, he said.

He further said that appropriate practical measures will be taken to address the regional inequalities caused by an imbalance in resource distribution.

The CM also said that the Kasaragod, Wayanad, Idukki, and Kuttanad packages will be implemented efficiently.

Besides that, adequate resource allocation will be ensured for the Malabar region and the people of the coastal and hilly areas in development and welfare activities, infrastructure development and the health and education sectors, he said.

Satheesan said that the government has also envisaged majors initiatives, including the Wayanad Tribal University, for educational advancement, research, skill development and socio-economic transformation of the tribal communities.

"This will give a new direction to the educational and research potential of backward districts, including Wayanad," he said.
