Gold ornaments worth Rs 55 lakh stolen from house in Thrissur

Gold ornaments worth Rs 55 lakh were stolen from a house at Peramangalam here, police said on Friday.

The incident took place at the residence of Shakeer (55) at Thaloor near Peramangalam.

According to police, Shakeer, who owns a textile shop, and his family were at the shop till around 1.15 am on Friday due to the Onam rush.

The theft came to light after they returned home.

Police said the back door of the house was found open and the gold ornaments kept in an almirah in an upstairs bedroom were missing.

The stolen ornaments included seven gold chains, two necklaces, two anklets, two bracelets, five bangles and five pairs of rings, weighing a total of 47 sovereigns and valued at around Rs 55 lakh, police said.

The gold was purchased for Shakeer's daughter's marriage, and her engagement had been held recently, police said.

Peramangalam police, which registered a case, are examining CCTV footage from the area as part of the investigation.

Police are also collecting information from neighbours about any strangers seen in the area in recent days.

An abandoned food packet and a liquor bottle were also found in the compound of the house, police said.
