Thiruvananthapuram | A godown of a furniture shop was completely gutted in a major fire at Pattom here on Sunday, Fire and Rescue Service officials said.

The blaze was noticed around 10.30 am at the godown located behind the shop, and an initial attempt was made to douse it with water.

As the fire spread further, the Fire and Rescue Service was called in.

Almost all the beds, upholstery materials and furniture stored at the godown were damaged in the fire, officials said. Similar incidents had been reported at the godown three times earlier, they added.

The fire spread to an adjoining building where people were residing. However, the occupants were immediately evacuated, preventing any casualties, officials said.

The furniture shop was closed as it was Sunday.

Four fire tenders were deployed, and the situation was brought under control by 12.30 pm; the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, officials added.
