Four govt doctors booked in Kerala over girl's death after stray dog attack

A case has been registered against four government doctors after a seven-year-old girl died of rabies following a stray dog attack at Punalur here, officials said on Thursday.

Kollam (Kerala) | A case has been registered against four government doctors after a seven-year-old girl died of rabies following a stray dog attack at Punalur here, officials said on Thursday.

Niya Faisal of Pathanapuram succumbed to rabies in May last year after being attacked by a stray dog while playing in front of her house.

She was initially rushed to the Punalur Government Taluk Hospital and was later shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.

Following her death, the family alleged medical negligence against the doctors at the Punalur hospital.

They later filed a complaint with a magistrate's court, which directed the police to register a case and conduct an investigation.

Police officials at Punalur station said the case was registered two days ago against Punalur Government Taluk Hospital Superintendent Dr Sunil Kumar, Dr Devi Lekshmi, Dr Anjitha and Dr Jayasurya.

Police said the doctors face charges including medical negligence and destruction of evidence.

Officials said the investigation has just begun, and the doctors' statements will be recorded in the coming days
