Family of five escapes unhurt as car catches fire in Kerala

A family of five-two adults and three children-had a narrow escape after the car they were travelling in caught fire near here on Friday, officials said.

The incident occurred in the morning while the family was travelling from Chittar to Konni.

According to Fire and Rescue Services officials, the blaze broke out at Payyanamon near Konni after the occupants noticed smoke and flames emerging from the vehicle's bonnet.

They immediately pulled over to the roadside and got out of the car.

Within about 10 minutes, the fire engulfed the entire vehicle, completely gutting it, officials said.

A fire tender from Konni reached the spot following a distress call and carried out firefighting operations.

The fire was brought under control within half an hour, they added.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, and the Motor Vehicles Department will examine the vehicle, officials said.

Steps are being taken to remove the burnt vehicle from the roadside, they added.
