Expelled IUML leader arrested, released on bail over remarks against woman MLA

An expelled IUML leader, accused of making derogatory remarks against CPI(M) MLA U Prathibha, was arrested and released on bail in Kayamkulam here, police said on Friday.

Alappuzha (Kerala) | An expelled IUML leader, accused of making derogatory remarks against CPI(M) MLA U Prathibha, was arrested and released on bail in Kayamkulam here, police said on Friday.

According to police, a case was registered against Irshad on Thursday night following a complaint filed by Prathibha.

Irshad was taken into custody, and his arrest was recorded, officials said.

As the charges invoked were bailable, he was released on bail, police added.

Police also said that the Election Commission had directed registration of a case after finding that Irshad's remarks violated the Model Code of Conduct.

However, the case was registered on the basis of Prathibha's complaint.

Irshad, a local Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader and UDF convener in Kayamkulam, allegedly made objectionable remarks about Prathibha during a campaign event, claiming she was "selling" her eloquence and beauty to secure a third consecutive win.

He also accused the MLA of "failing" to work for the people.

Following the controversy, Irshad was removed from the party and relieved of election responsibilities in the Kayamkulam constituency.

The CPI(M) targeted the UDF over the remarks.

However, UDF leaders, including Congress candidate M Liju, condemned Irshad's comments.
