Discussions going on regarding safe vehicular modifications: Minister C P John

The govt was mulling permitting vehicular modifications that are not dangerous, a poll promise made by the UDF to the 'Gen Z' population during its assembly poll campaign

Thiruvananthapuram | Kerala Transport Minister C P John on Tuesday said that the government was mulling permitting vehicular modifications that are not dangerous, a poll promise made by the UDF to the 'Gen Z' population during its assembly poll campaign.

John, in response to a query raised by CPI(M) leader Saji Cherian during the question hour in the assembly, said that discussions were going on permitting non-dangerous modifications, like those related to colour code or safe vehicular body fittings.

Cherian, in the assembly, asked whether the government intends to allow vehicular modifications as desired by the youth and whether they are permitted under the existing laws.

He also asked what kind of modifications would be permitted.

In response, John said that central laws apply to the state with regard to modifications and therefore, changes which result in use of excessively bright lights or generate very loud noise will not be permitted.

"However, permitting non-dangerous modifications, like with regard to colour code, safe fittings which do not project outside the vehicle and other cosmetic changes, are under discussion," the minister said.

John also told the House that the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will try to restart several routes and services which were stopped during the COVID period.

A decision will be taken after a study is carried out by the KSRTC, he added.
