CPI(M) Polit Bureau to discuss poll defeats in Kerala, West Bengal

CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby said the party's Polit Bureau will discuss the electoral defeats in Kerala and West Bengal during its meeting in New Delhi

New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram | CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby said the party's Polit Bureau will discuss the electoral defeats in Kerala and West Bengal during its meeting in New Delhi on Friday.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Polit Bureau meeting, Baby said the party had already held discussions at various levels on the setbacks suffered in the two states.

"For the first time in history, a BJP-led government has come to power there (West Bengal). In spite of the Left Front government in Kerala carrying out many people-oriented initiatives, it suffered an unexpected defeat. And it was not an ordinary defeat; it was an extraordinary setback that required serious introspection," he said.

Baby said discussions on the defeat were held at all levels of the party.

According to him, various party units independently expressed their views on the reasons for the defeat, and these were documented.

"State committee meetings were held both in West Bengal and Kerala, where the matter was discussed extensively. Based on these discussions, a report was prepared. It is this report that is now being discussed in Polit Bureau," he said.

He said the issue would also be taken up at the party's Central Committee meeting scheduled from July 11 to 13.

"For that Central Committee meeting, the Polit Bureau has to prepare a report. It is related to the elections as well as broader political issues. Those are the matters that will be discussed in the Polit Bureau," he said.

Asked whether the report prepared by the state committees on the reasons for the defeat would be accepted by the central leadership, Baby said it would not be appropriate to speculate in advance on what the Polit Bureau would decide.

Apart from Baby, Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) Kerala state secretary MV Govindan also arrived in New Delhi to attend the Polit Bureau meeting.

In Kerala, CPI(M) led LDF suffered a severe defeat, winning just 35 out of 140 seats in the recently held Assembly election.
