Alappuzha (Kerala) | Independent MLA G Sudhakaran on Thursday said political leaders should consult experts before making public comments on the functioning of the Thottappally Spillway, asserting that opinions on the issue should be based on scientific reasoning.
Sudhakaran, who represents the Ambalapuzha constituency where the spillway is located, was reacting to criticism by legislators over the alleged delay in clearing waste accumulated near the spillway and removing the sandbar at the estuary mouth, which they claimed had aggravated flooding in Kuttanad and Upper Kuttanad.
The Thottappally Spillway plays a crucial role in draining floodwaters from the Pampa, Manimala and Achankovil rivers into the sea.
Overflowing of these rivers has led to flooding in Kuttanad and Upper Kuttanad in recent days.
Recently, CPI(M) MLA Saji Cherian, representing Chengannur, and UDF MLA Reji Cheriyan, representing Kuttanad, visited the spillway and alleged that delays in clearing accumulated waste near the shutters and removing the sandbar at the estuary had worsened flooding in their respective constituencies.
Speaking to a television channel, Sudhakaran questioned the basis of Saji Cherian's remarks.
"On what basis is he making such claims? He is not an expert; he is a politician. Did he consult the engineering department? No, he didn't. So there is no need to even respond to such statements. When giving an opinion, first use common sense and then consult someone who knows," he said.
Sudhakaran also questioned whether Saji Cherian was in a position to resolve issues relating to the spillway.
He said leaders should not visit Thottappally merely "to put on a show." Referring to Reji Cheriyan, Sudhakaran said if the Kuttanad MLA had also made similar remarks during his visit to the spillway, he had nothing further to say about it.
The MLA said desilting rivers and water bodies in Kuttanad and Upper Kuttanad was essential to ensure the free flow of water and reduce flooding.
Sudhakaran, a former CPI(M) leader and minister, contested the Assembly election as an Independent backed by the UDF after not renewing his party membership.
Last month, Sudhakaran had expressed displeasure after Reji Cheriyian visited the Thottappally Spillway to assess the situation without informing him.
