Congress MLA Sandeep Varier receives death threat over phone; police launch probe

Kasargod (Kerala) | Kerala Police have launched an investigation after Congress MLA Sandeep Varier allegedly received a death threat over the phone.

According to a complaint filed by the MLA, an unidentified caller threatened to shoot him.

Following the complaint, Chandera Police registered a case and began an inquiry into the incident.

Police said preliminary investigations suggest that the threat may have originated from a person within the state.

Initial findings also indicate that the call was made from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

Investigators have collected details of the phone number and call records and are examining them as part of the probe.

The assistance of the cyber wing has also been sought to verify the identity of the caller and determine the motive behind the threat.

Police said all possible angles are being examined in view of the seriousness of the threat.

Efforts are underway to identify and trace the person responsible, they added.

Varier, a former BJP leader, quit the party in 2024 and joined the Congress.
