Thiruvananthapuram | Congress MLA Chandy Oommen on Thursday defended Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan's remarks questioning KSU's role in deciding government pleaders, saying the chief minister had probably only meant that, as head of the Law Department, he was aware of every aspect of the appointment process.
Oommen, son of late CM Oommen Chandy, said that while the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student wing of the Congress, has the right to air its opinion in the matter, Satheesan's remark need only be seen as him indicating that he has the most knowledge about selecting government pleaders (GPs).
"Everyone need not know about everything. That is probably what the CM intended to say," he said.
The KSU leadership reportedly is displeased with the CM's remarks made at a press conference here on Wednesday.
Satheesan had said that government pleaders were selected based on merit and recommendations and had asserted that the state does not bow to pressure from political or student organisations while choosing its legal representatives.
He had also said that the KSU unit committee of Thiruvananthapuram Law College does not decide who should be appointed as a GP and that the media was creating such reports.
The KSU has opposed the appointment of a former leader of the Students Federation of India (SFI) -- CPI(M)'s student wing -- as a GP.
On the matter of his father's memorial day event on July 18, Oommen said that the CM's office said he was busy in the morning, but would reach the former CM's grave at Puthuppally church in Kottayam by afternoon.
"So please do not create a controversy over it," he said, adding that the CM has also been invited to the Oommen Chandy leadership summit.
