Police have registered a case against an Instagram user for allegedly posting abusive comments targeting ADGP P Vijayan on social media in connection with the Cheranalloor road accident case

Kochi | Police have registered a case against an Instagram user for allegedly posting abusive comments targeting ADGP P Vijayan on social media in connection with the Cheranalloor road accident case, officials said on Saturday.

The accident case pertains to the death of 55-year-old Jayabalakrishnan on October 25 after a Mercedes-Benz allegedly driven by the minor son of an Additional District and Sessions Judge rammed his scooter.

The Ernakulam Rural Cyber Crime Police registered the case against an Instagram user identified as Rahul Reju following a complaint from the ADGP's office on Friday.

According to the FIR, the accused posted abusive comments on October 28 beneath a video uploaded on Instagram.

The video pertained to ADGP Vijayan's visit to Jayabalakrishnan's residence following the accident.

The FIR alleged that the comments were deliberately posted to publicly defame the senior police officer, humiliate him and create hatred and misunderstanding.

The police registered the case under Section 296(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.

Police said the Instagram account user had been identified and would be summoned for interrogation.

Following the accident in Cheranalloor, allegations of police lapses had surfaced, leading to the transfer of officials at the concerned police station.
