Thrissur (Kerala) | A probe has been launched after a drone was found flying over the Viyoor Central Jail here in the early hours of Friday, officials said.

According to police, security personnel spotted the drone flying over the jail premises multiple times between 12 at night and 2 am.

The drone was also seen flying over the nearby Fire and Rescue Services Academy and a college campus.

Prison Department officials immediately alerted the police, who launched an investigation into the incident.

Police said the Viyoor Central Jail is a sensitive installation as it houses the High Security Prison, where several accused in terrorism-related cases are lodged.

Flying drones in the area is prohibited, officials said.

Police at the Viyoor police station said a case would be registered after the preliminary inquiry.

Investigators suspect the drone may have been flown to create content for social media. However, they said all possible angles are being examined.

The State Special Branch, the intelligence wing of the Kerala Police, is also gathering information about the incident, officials added.
