Beijing/Shanghai | India is participating with its "largest-ever" contingent of 70 competitors at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in China, with Team Skill India competing in 63 of 64 skill events, including 11 categories for the first time.

The biennial competition is the world's largest platform for vocational education and skills excellence, where young professionals demonstrate technical expertise and compete against global standards. This year's edition is being held in Shanghai from September 22 to 27.

About 1,385 competitors from 68 countries and regions are competing in 64 skill events, according to the organisers.

"Happy to see our largest-ever Team India" at the WorldSkills competition, Indian Consul General in Shanghai Pratik Mathur said in a post on X on Wednesday.

Team Skill India is competing in 11 new skills, including dental prosthetics, unmanned aerial systems, aircraft maintenance, software testing and retail sales, according to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

China has sent 71 competitors, who are participating in all 64 events, covering sectors including transportation and logistics, construction, manufacturing and engineering, information and communication technology, creative arts and fashion, and social and personal services, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Themed "Master Skills, Change Your Future!", this year's competition is being held alongside the WorldSkills Conference 2026 and WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 Expo.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang addressed the opening ceremony of the WorldSkills Conference 2026 on Wednesday, calling for closer international exchanges and cooperation on skills development.
