Kerala: YouTuber held for allegedly defaming Cong leader on social media

Pathanamthitta (Kerala) | A YouTuber was arrested for allegedly posting defamatory content against a woman Congress leader on social media in Adoor here, police said on Sunday.

Rajan Joseph was arrested by the police from Kochi on Saturday and brought to Adoor, officials said.

Adoor Police registered a case against Joseph based on a complaint filed by Sreena Devi Kunjamma, a Pathanamthitta district panchayat member.

According to police, Joseph had posted defamatory content targeting Kunjamma on the social media platforms.

After registering the case, police issued him a notice to appear before the investigating team for questioning.

However, he failed to appear and was subsequently arrested, officials said.

Following the arrest, Kunjamma said in a Facebook post that Joseph had fabricated stories and spread defamatory content through videos on social media for monetary gain.

She also alleged that Joseph had repeatedly challenged the police to arrest him before he was taken into custody.

"He was brought to the Adoor Police Station at around 10.30 pm. I saw him there in person. He was sitting on the floor of a lock-up cell. I spoke to him briefly, introduced myself, and then left," she said.

In the post, Kunjamma further claimed that Joseph had slept in the lock-up and remarked that if he faced any inconvenience while in Adoor, it would be addressed, adding that "once he crosses the Pathanamthitta border, we will ensure he has comfortable accommodation."

Police said Joseph has been booked under non-bailable provisions and will be produced before the jurisdictional court for remand proceedings.
