Rains continue in MP; IMD issues orange and yellow alerts for parts of state

Most parts of Madhya Pradesh received showers on Thursday and the momentum is likely to continue with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting very heavy rainfall in five districts and heavy rains in 16 others in the next 24 hours.

Bhopal | Most parts of Madhya Pradesh received showers on Thursday and the momentum is likely to continue with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting very heavy rainfall in five districts and heavy rains in 16 others in the next 24 hours.

Rains coupled with thunderstorms were reported in all districts of the state in the 24-hour period that ended 8.30 am on Thursday, the IMD said.

Very heavy rains were reported in Alirajpur, while Tikamgarh, Neemuch, Sehore, Dhar, Harda and Barwani districts received heavy showers, it said.

Rains led to waterlogging in some parts of Jabalpur as commuters were seen wading through submerged roads.

Rainfall in the range of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours is categorised as 'heavy rain', while 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rain in the same duration is attributed as 'very heavy rainfall'.

An orange alert of very heavy rainfall for isolated places in the state's five districts - Alirajpur, Jhabua, Balaghat, Mandla and Dhar - has been issued for 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Friday, an official of the IMD's Bhopal office told PTI.

Likewise, a yellow alert of heavy rainfall has been issued for isolated places in Indore, Damoh, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Panna, Sagar, Seoni, Barwani, Dewas, Mandsaur, Narmadapuram, Raisen, Ratlam, Sehore, Ujjain and Vidisha, he added.

An orange alert asks authorities concerned to "be prepared" to respond to any emergency situation arising out of weather change, while the yellow alert signifies that the weather could change, and hence people should be vigilant.
