Come to Madhya Pradesh for Authentic, Rustic and Raw Experiences: Secretary Dr. Ilaiyaraaja T

Addresses the National Tourism Organisation (NTO) Talk Session at International Travel Trade Show ITB Asia

Singapore/Bhopal | Secretary, Tourism, and Managing Director of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, Dr. Ilaiyaraaja T, said that travellers should visit Madhya Pradesh for “authentic, rustic and raw experiences” that offer a genuine glimpse into the state’s unspoilt rural surroundings and local way of life. He emphasised that Madhya Pradesh is truly the “Heart of Incredible India”, not only geographically but also because of its cultural diversity and warm hospitality.

Dr. Ilaiyaraaja was addressing the National Tourism Organisation (NTO) Talk Session at the international travel trade show ITB Asia, held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore.

Emphasising innovation and discovery in tourism, Dr. Ilaiyaraaja remarked, “If necessity is the mother of invention, curiosity is the father of discovery.”

He explained that global tourism has undergone a rapid transformation following the COVID-19 pandemic, with travellers increasingly looking beyond established destinations in search of new and distinctive experiences.

He further stated that excessive tourist congestion is primarily caused by the concentration of visitors at a limited number of destinations during specific periods. The most effective solution, he emphasised, lies in redistributing tourism demand and continuously discovering lesser-known destinations.

Effective Showcase of Madhya Pradesh’s Wildlife, Heritage and Art at the ‘Redistributing Demand Through Discovery’ Session

During the NTO Talk Session on ‘Redistributing Demand Through Discovery’, Secretary Dr. Ilaiyaraaja T delivered a presentation highlighting Madhya Pradesh’s tourism potential on the global stage. He stated that with more than 25 per cent of its geographical area under forest cover, Madhya Pradesh is one of India’s greenest states. It is also a major tribal state, home to seven major tribal communities and 45 sub-tribal groups that preserve their distinctive traditions and ways of life. The state is divided into five major cultural regions, each known for its unique heritage. Its rich textile crafts, including Chanderi and Maheshwari textiles, world-renowned Gond painting, and Bhopal’s traditional Zari-Zardozi embroidery, enjoy a distinctive identity.

Describing Madhya Pradesh as a vibrant ‘Wild Kingdom’, Secretary Dr. Ilaiyaraaja said that the state is a leading tiger destination in India, with more than nine tiger reserves. Madhya Pradesh is also recognised as a leading state for cheetahs, leopards, vultures and gharials. The globally renowned stories of Mowgli and The Jungle Book, associated with Pench National Park, are major attractions for tourists. The state also offers unique adventure experiences, including exciting nature walks in Pench and river rafting on the Betwa River in the historic town of Orchha.

In addition, Madhya Pradesh has 22 UNESCO heritage sites, comprising three World Heritage Sites—Sanchi Stupa, the Khajuraho Group of Monuments and the Bhimbetka Rock Shelters—and 19 sites on UNESCO’s Tentative List.

He further stated that the state is expanding its helicopter tourism services to enhance air connectivity and connect travellers with offbeat destinations. Madhya Pradesh is also one of India’s most film-friendly states and has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Spanish Film Commission to give fresh impetus to international film tourism.

Highlighting the state’s commitment to women’s empowerment, he noted that initiatives such as women safari drivers and hotels operated entirely by women are helping to strengthen safe, responsible and inclusive tourism across Madhya Pradesh.

Invitation to Exhibitors, Travel and Tour Operators to Experience Rural Tourism, Warm Hospitality and Traditional Cuisine

Secretary Dr. Ilaiyaraaja T invited the international travel community, tour operators and global tourists to visit Madhya Pradesh. He said that rural tourism in Madhya Pradesh is being developed in collaboration with local communities and residents, offering tourists a unique opportunity to experience local life, art and traditions at close quarters.

He emphasised that the true beauty of any destination lies not only in its natural landscapes and monuments but also in the warmth, hospitality and welcoming spirit of its local people.

He specially invited international visitors to savour the unique and traditional cuisine of Madhya Pradesh. He highlighted the famous poha-jalebi of Malwa, the spicy and tangy Ratlami sev, traditional dal-bafla, the renowned gajak of Morena and Gwalior, and delicious mutton curries reflecting the culinary traditions of the Nawabi and Bundeli regions.

Secretary Dr. Ilaiyaraaja expressed confidence that the state's year-round cultural festivals, rich natural heritage, convenient helicopter connectivity, safe environment and the heartfelt hospitality of its people would make every tourist's visit to Madhya Pradesh a truly memorable experience.
