Central Railway introduces suburban train in Mumbai with dedicated compartment for senior citizens

Mumbai | Central Railway has introduced a suburban train in Mumbai with a dedicated and renovated compartment for senior citizens, an official said on Saturday.

In a release, CR said the middle luggage compartment in the sixth coach from the Mumbai-end was structurally and aesthetically modified to cater specifically to senior citizens following directives from the Railway Board.

The prototype rake has been developed at Central Railway's Matunga Workshop, it added.

"This dedicated compartment will minimise hassles faced by senior citizens while boarding and de-boarding suburban trains, especially during rush hours. It will ensure comfortable and safe journey," the release stated.

"The key features of the upgraded compartment include enhanced seating with three 3-seater benches and two 2-seater units (total 13 seats), stainless steel tubular partitions with sight-level panels and integrated grab poles, knurled vertical grab poles at footboards, and emergency ladders under both doorframes," the release informed.

The interior has also been vinyl-wrapped for improved aesthetics, it added.

"This prototype will serve as a model for upgrading all EMU rakes with similar senior-friendly compartments, reaffirming Indian Railways' commitment to inclusive and passenger-centric innovation," the release said.
